Keynote: IT@Illinois
IT@Illinois is an initiative aimed at creating a new kind of organization for university IT support. What motivates this is the
recognition that we need to make significant investment in new capabilities and competencies, without increasing our total
expenditure on IT. This is an extremely challenging problem for which there are no ready-made answers. To date, we have arrived at a deeper
understanding of the characteristics of our current organization, documented a number of issues that a new organization should handle,
developed some preliminary ideas about new structures and roles, and generated a large set of requirements that must be fulfilled before
this initiative can be considered successful. Still missing is a conceptual breakthrough that is instantly recognizable as a promising
pattern for the future. Such a breakthrough can come from anywhere in the community—for example, from you. |

Structure, Culture, and Change
Computing and IT at the University of Illinois have a long history that spans many decades. Over the years, organizational culture and structure developed through both need and innovation, without significant planning from a big picture perspective. With the launch of the IT@Illinois project, we are already experiencing changes to our culture, as collaboration seems to be receiving greater attention across campus. Once a vision for the future of IT on campus is chosen, our organization is also likely to experience a great deal of change. To prepare ourselves, we need to understand our existing culture, in addition to considering how we can play a role in the future. Through presentation and discussion, this session will continue and expand the dialog surrounding IT on campus and how we can participate in, contribute to, and facilitate cultural and organizational change as IT professionals. |

Red 2
This session will provide a first look at a job-sharing system developed with funding from the Illinois Informatics Institute and intended to allow campus units to post jobs on which other units or individuals can bid. The purpose of this system is to optimize the use of human resources across campus and to enable more flexible and substantive interactions between units. Software for this project was designed by Red2, a UK-based B2B auction software developer; the project was managed by Patricia Hswe (GSLIS), with help from Nyle Bolliger and others at AITS. |

ID Management: Directory Services, the NetID Lifecycle, and More
CITES currently operates several directory services for the academic computing needs of campus. These include ED (formerly ph), Novell eDirectory, the campus LDAP, and Microsoft Active Directory. These technologies provide service to many clients and applications across campus. CITES has been working hard to create the next generation of directory services to meet Illinois' academic computing needs. Les and Keith will outline recent additions to this core service and next steps for CITES-operated directory services and show ways in which these changes can help IT professionals. They will also explain the NetID life cycle for faculty, staff, and students and some differences between these affiliations and those of allied agencies and guests. |
