Biographical Information
John Arends
John Arends is a network analyst with Information Technology and Communication Services in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences. He has been involved extensively in rolling out VMware Virtual Infrastructure for ITCS this past year and has been experimenting with virtualization products on the desktop for several years now.
Corey Betka
Corey Betka has been a Network Service Manager with the Network Services group since August of 2006. His main responsibilities are campus DNS, Audio/Video Conferencing/VoIP, and supporting the CITES portion of Campus Multimedia Users "Matrix" streaming service. Prior to joining CITES, Corey spent eight years as a Network Administrator with University Housing, where he was responsible for the student computer centers, administrative workstations, servers, and network infrastructure.
Mike Bohlmann
Mike Bohlmann has been with the Office of Technology Management (OTM) on campus since 2002, when he joined the University as an information management specialist. Now, working as the Manager of Information Systems for the OTM at UIC as well, Mike performs IT services at all levels from end user support and application development to website development and management, which includes planning, strategy, and budgeting. Mike is currently working towards completion of a Master's degree in MIS from UIS with his thesis research focused on creating a framework to help IT managers and organizational leaders better understand each other and the role of IT within an organization.
Jack Brighton
Jack Brighton is Assistant Director of Broadcasting and Director of Internet Development at WILL Public Media, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he manages web site technology and content. For 16 years he produced WILL’s public affairs radio program Focus 580, and has also produced many news features, documentaries, and long-form broadcast and new media projects. He is a guest lecturer in online journalism at the Department of Journalism at the University of Illinois, and presents workshops on Internet media, media preservation, and web development at academic and media industry conferences. He chairs the News, Documentary, and Television Interest Group of the Association of Moving Image Archivists, and serves on the PBCore Resource Group established by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. From 2002 to 2007 he chaired the University of Illinois Campus Webmasters, and in 2003 he co-founded the University of Illinois Educational Media Group to foster collaboration on best practices in Internet media for higher education.
Mike Bombich
After working in higher education IT for two years, Mike Bombich joined Apple as a Systems Engineer.  For the past five years Mike has provided pre-sales technical consulting for higher education accounts in Missouri and Illinois.
Tim Carroll
Tim Carroll is the Technical Lead for the University Portal Project. Tim has been with CITES for four years and has worked on various projects for the University of Illinois and the Urbana campus. Prior to CITES, Tim worked as a consultant for State Farm Insurance as well as Caterpillar.
Randy Cetin
Randy Cetin joined CITES in 1986 as research programmer in the "Graphics Group," and has since held numerous positions in the organization. An alumnus of the University of Illinois, Randy is the Director of CITES Systems and Technology Services. The division encompasses a wide range of service responsibilities that include the CITES computer labs, cost-recovery services for Unix workstations, CITES' two data centers and Operations Center, management of numerous production servers and services, and the development of integration tools and infrastructure services.
Christopher Clausen
Christopher Clausen currently works as a Network Specialist I for System Services in the Swanlund Administration Building. He has worked at a variety of departments around campus in addition to volunteering for the ACM@UIUC student chapter and taking classes here as well. He is continuing to work on a BS in Computer Science degree here at Illinois.
Mike Corn
Mike Corn joined CITES as the Director of Security Services and Information Privacy in December 2003. Mike originally came to Urbana for graduate school and has worked and taught in both the School of Music and the Department of Astronomy. During the mid to late 90s he worked as a developer, database designer, and policy work with University Administration.
James Eyrich
James Eyrich has worked for CITES in the Network Design Office since January of 2006, when he was hired into the Wireless group. Since that time, he has transitioned to doing both wired and wireless network designs and in 2007 was named the Wireless Service Manager.
David Gerstenecker
David Gerstenecker has served the College of ACES since 1996. He currently is the team leader for Computer Support Services in the College’s Information Technology and Communication Services unit (ITCS). David remembers enduring the slow virtual technology of Microsoft’s Virtual PC in order to run Windows 95 on Mac OS 9. He is very excited to be working with current VMware Server, ESX, and Fusion technologies that clearly show how mature virtualization has become.
Tiy Goddard
Tiy Goddard has served as Manager, Professional Development with Training for Business Professionals (T4B) since September. Prior to joining T4B, she received an MBA with a Certificate in Public Management from Stanford University in June. Tiy spent much of her pre-MBA career in the nonprofit sector in management and organizational development for growing enterprises. In addition, she worked to establish employee orientation and professional development programs inside a prominent hospitality company. In her current role, Tiy manages the design and delivery of training and development programs for academic professionals, administrative and other University staff.
Craig Jackson
Craig Jackson has been with the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences since 2001. His current role as director for an information technology center (ATLAS) in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences is to provide leadership to a complex unit which provides IT services to the College. One of his principal duties is to represent the College to vendors and create cooperative purchasing opportunities for the 54 departments and units representing the diverse nature of the College, as well as seek mutually-beneficial partnerships across campus.
Dr. Greg Jackson
Gregory A. Jackson is Vice President and Chief Information Officer at the University of Chicago. In this capacity he reports to the President, and manages the University's central computing facilities, telephones, communications, network services, administrative computing, academic computing, computer store, and related entities. Sally Jackson
Sally Jackson was named Chief Information Officer (CIO) and Associate Provost at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in May 2007. Prior to becoming CIO at Illinois, Professor Jackson served as Vice President for Learning and Information Technologies and Chief Information Officer at the University of Arizona.
Janet Jones
Janet Jones is a recent addition to the CITES organization - joining the group in January 2008. She is the Manager of CITES Communication Customer Service which provides UIUC with voice and data communications services such as landline telephones, cell phones, voice mail, paging, and teleconferencing. Janet has over sixteen years of experience in the communications industry.
Thomas Kunka
Thomas Kunka is the Coordinator of Network Systems and Operations and is responsible for support and planning in all aspects of computing technology and networking in the ITS classrooms as well as internal operations. Previous to his administrative and technical roles at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he served Illinois State University as Assistant Director of Computer User Services, where he managed the campus' technology training and student technology orientation programs.
Drew MacGregor

Drew MacGregor has been with the Department of Computer Science since 1998, in both the roles of Hypermedia Communicator and currently, Coordinator of Educational and Multimedia Technologies. He has been in the field of streaming media since 1997. Drew designed the AV capture and delivery infrastructure in the Siebel Center and is a part of the campus multimedia steering group. Drew has extensively researched lecture capture systems for classroom recording, and currently coordinates media capture and delivery, video conferencing, and the videowall for the CS Department.

Jeff McDaniel
Jeffrey McDaniel has been working as a network engineer since 1990 for many clients both small and large in diverse industries. In this time, Mr. McDaniel has received certifications from networking and security vendors such as Novell, Microsoft, Cisco, Citrix, CheckPoint and others.

His experience includes design, installation and Project Management. He has managed a $50 million network installation at a Fortune 1000 corporation. Mr. McDaniel hands on experience that includes new installations, migrations, recovery of data from failures, and supporting user/connectivity issues. Mr. McDaniel has supported environments for customers such as Chicago Mercantile Exchange, CBOT, Packaging Corp of America, Baxter Credit, GA Dept. of Revenue, Wildman Harold Allen & Dixon and numerous small & medium sized businesses.
Shea Nangle
Shea Nangle has worked for the University of Illinois since 2001.  Until 2007, he worked for CITES' Production Application Group, managing a number of campus-wide services, including Cluster Webmail, Express Email and NetFiles. In July of 2007, Shea moved to the Security and Information Privacy Office, where he works on development of IT standards to support the University's IT policies.
Gordon Oyer
Gordon Oyer has working with OBFS Accounting since he joined the University in 1985. He has worked with University property accounting since 1989, most recently as University Director of University Property Accounting and Reporting (2003-2007). He currently works with University Accounting and Financial Reporting on a part-time basis administering special projects.
Michele Raupp
Michele Raupp, PMP, came to the university last October from Keane, Inc. where she held positions as an Implementation Coordinator, Project Coordinator and Staffing Manager. With 11 years experience in marketing and communications, and 10 years experience in IT, Michele has returned to her alma mater as the Project Manager for the university's domain name change project.
Warren Raquel
Warren Raquel is an IT professional with over 15 years industry experience. Since 2004, he has been a Network Security Officer within the Office of the CIO where he has applied his experience to Incident Response and Digital Forensics.
Clark Roberts
Clark Roberts has been involved with Information Technology at major Universities since 1980. He came to the University of Illinois in 1985 and immediately began working with computers and networks to teach and do research in Agricultural Economics. From then until 1996 he also served as the State Computer Specialist for the Illinois Farm Business Farm Management Association. Since then Clark has been the Manager of System Services in the College of ACES, Department of Agricultural and Consumer Economics where he leads a team of professionals that provide network and system administration as well as end-user support and program development services.
Sol Roberts-Lieb
Sol Roberts-Lieb began his career at the University as a Network Security Officer in the Office of the CIO in January of 2007. Now, as Manager of the CITES Data Center Group, Sol leads a team of IT professionals who provide data center installations, environmental management, and strategic support for Data Center Initiatives. Sol is currently charged with creating the CITES Data Center Strategy Roadmap that includes ways to reduce the carbon footprint of the Data Center and improve operational efficiencies.
Dave Ruby
David Ruby has been with CITES since 1990 when he was one of the first network administrators on campus. He has since been a developer, network designer, and in recent memory, the manager of Instructional Computing Services (ICS). ICS runs computer labs across campus and provides IT services to help other units run computer labs more efficiently.
Terry Ruprecht
Terry W. Ruprecht is Director of Energy Conservation at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has 35 years of experience in higher education facilities, having served in administrative roles at the University of Illinois since 1988, including Associate Vice Chancellor and Associate Provost. Prior to Illinois he held engineering and administrative positions at Michigan State University for 16 years. Mr. Ruprecht is a registered professional engineer in Michigan and Illinois, and a Certified Energy Manager. His background includes an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from Michigan State, a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Illinois, and graduate business studies at the University of Ghent in Ghent, Belgium.
Beth Scheid
Beth Scheid, CITES Director of Communications Technologies, has been a part of academic computing for over 25 years. During this time, she has overseen CITES groups that designed, implemented, and maintained network data, wireless, voice, and DNS services for the campus. Currently, she is involved with the five-year project to upgrade the networking infrastructure in 159 campus buildings and the project to upgrade the current campus voice system.
Chris Skaar
Chris Skaar began working for CITES in 2001 and has worked for such prestigious groups as the Operations Center and the Network Design Office. He currently holds the title of Team Leader for Network Support, the group formerly known as Network Maintenance. Chris has been Service Manager for Iris for the last 4 years and Lens since it became an "official" service 2 years ago. His other duties include fixing Misbehaving Network Stuff on Campus and being Tech Lead for the optical side of the ICCN.
Mike Smeltzer
Mike Smeltzer is CITES' Director of Networking and has been with CITES since March of 2005. Previously at CITES, Mike worked with the Campus Network Upgrade Project. Today he oversees all the networking groups at CITES as well as the Classroom Technology group. Mike came to CITES from McLeodUSA, where he was the local Operations Manager. In that capacity, he worked with the campus on a variety of voice and data projects. In addition to working in the communications industry, Mike has been a faculty member in both the UIUC College of Communications and University High School, and was publisher and general manager of the Illini Media Company.
Dan Smith
Dan Smith is a Client Technologist for DELL.
Tracy Smith
Tracy Smith joined CITES in September 2007 as ICCN Operations Manager. Recently her role expanded to include managing the Network Services Team, which encompasses DNS, Pinnacle, as well as the service managers for Cisco Meeting Place, Real Systems Helix streaming server, and Quick Connect.
Deb Stone
Deb Stone has served the University of Illinois since May of 2001. Her first assignment was working with UI Integrate focusing on academic HR. Since that time she has been consistently involved with various campus wide committees including being liaison to Graduate Employee’s Organization (GEO) and Visiting Academic Professionals (VAP) for contract details. She is now Director of Academic Human Resources, reporting to the Associate Provost for HR. In that role she has become a contributing force in overseeing policies, procedures and the implementation of various campus and university HR initiatives (Banner Front End, Applicant Tracking System, Background Investigations).
Ryan Thomas
Ryan Thomas began serving the College of Education in 1995 as a CITES Departmental Services consultant for database development and network administration. Now, as Director of IT at the College of Education, Ryan leads a team of IT professionals who provide a wide range of IT services to the college. Involved in various IT-related campus-wide committees over the years, both Ryan and members of his team contribute to efforts to improve campus IT services and their articulation with colleges and departments.

Stan Yagi
Stan Yagi is responsible for researching, promoting and implementing new service models, partnerships and collaborations in all aspects of information and educational technology that enable the campus to accomplish its strategic goals in a timely and cost effective fashion. Areas of focus include: working with external strategic partners, campus IT groups and CITES to create new service models that keep pace with the changing technology landscape and campus requirements, ensuring that core levels of information and educational technology services are available to all campus constituents regardless of their department, college or location, and advocating for the timely availability of new services that best serve the campus and enable campus constituents access to new enabling technologies regardless of the source. Stan also provides leadership to The Intercampus Communications Network (ICCN), a high-speed data network that connects all three University campuses – Urbana, Chicago, and Springfield.
