"Enabling Student Access to Course Availability Data: The Architecture of the UIUC Dynamic Timetable"

In 2000, the Office of the Provost initiated a project with the goal of providing students, advisors, and staff with access to course-section enrollment status via Internet technologies. The resulting web application has provided a growing target audience with information on the availability of courses without resorting to the use of the UI Direct login. On peak days suring registration periods, the web site frequently receives over a million hits. This session explores the architecture of the application as it has evolved over the past two years and reveals some interesting insights into the development and implementation of large scale, highly available applications using the COM+ environment on the Microsoft Windows 2000 platform. A brief examination of future developments will include implications for a redesign using the Microsoft .NET platform.
