CCSP Fall '01 Training Day Concurrent Sessions

I.T. Issues: A Really Long Term Perspective  View/Download PowerPoint presentation

What are the developing "Big Picture" issues in information and learning technologies both here at UIUC and nationally?  Pete Siegel, the Urbana campus CIO, will give an overview of what he and fellow CIOs are worrying about in terms of IT directions and opportunities over the next several years.  Sometimes tongue-in-cheek, sometimes serious, this presentation will review the changing role of leading land-grant and research institutions in the information age.  Areas will include convergence of communications technologies, portals and the web, issues in learning technologies, and the role the library will play in a more integrated information environment.  In addition, Mr. Siegel will talk about ways in which we can engage the community, both on campus and off, to work together with us to respond to the ever-changing demands to which we must respond.

Peter Siegel, Chief Information Officer, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

CorporateTime Calendaring: Introduction and Plans View/Download PowerPoint presentation

Campus Security: Current Issues

As Internet usage becomes essential for nearly every student staff and faculty member at the University of Illinois , other educational institutions, and businesses, the same problems with abuse and vandalism that accompany any infrastructure become more common. These problems are exacerbated by the fact that a large number of the machines are not under professional management, and are compounded by the increasing complexity of the operating systems currently being deployed.
This session is an overview of the current security situation at the U of I, where the challenges are, and what we are trying to do to combat them.

Sean Mauney, Network Security, Office of the CIO

Exchange Messaging and Collaboration Services   View/Download PowerPoint presentation

The Microsoft Exchange platform can be used for a multitude of purposes.  An Exchange 2000 service has been developed by CCSO to enhance messaging and collaboration on campus.  This session will describe and define the aspects of this service as well as demonstrate client access.  Topics will include cost, availability, limitations, features, requirements, public folders, virus protection, resource calendars, backups, etc.  The session will focus on what the service can do for you.  It will demonstrate Outlook access to the Exchange server, but not go over in detail how to use Outlook.

Decision Support Update View/Download PowerPoint presentation

Decision Support is a new initiative, being implemented in parallel with the UI-Integrate ERP project.  The purpose of Decision Support is to provide a data access and reporting environment for the University community.  The Decision Support environment will include new data from the UI-Integrate Banner system, historical data from older systems that will be replaced and data from non-Banner systems.

Like UI-Integrate, Decision Support is currently operating on a 5 year time horizon but unlike UI-Integrate, Decision Support will be a permanent function at the University.  What’s underway now is building the foundation for this permanent function.  Campus units will not see a major impact until late next year but if we stay on course, that impact will be a positive one.  This session will outline Decision Support’s mission, goals, growth path, general methods and recent activities.

Linda Bair, Interim Director, Decision Support
Mark Cumbow, Project Coordinator, Decision Support

UIUCnet Technology Update: Is it Suffering from Dissociative Identity Disorder?

Charley Kline, architect of UIUCnet, the campus network, will provide an update on current technologies deployed and in the wings for the campus backbone. These technologies include layer 3 switching, firewall hardware, gigabit Ethernet, and Quality of Service. Also to be discussed are current plans to upgrade backbone reliability, and a discussion of the "Internet Service Provider" and "Enterprise Network" backbone models. The current operation of UIUCnet fits somewhere between these two "personalities"; this fact creates significant challenges and forces design compromises for the backbone team.

Charles Kline , Enterprise Technical Planning Manager, CCSO
